Barbie Slays Bratz in Copyright Dispute
For the past four years Mattel, the makers of Barbie, have been in litigation to stop a former employee from distributing the Bratz line of dolls. Assuming there is no appeal, it would seem that Mattel has finally won this battle.Â
The former employee was found to have developed the Bratz line of toys while working as an employee for Mattel. This means that the new doll line was legally owned by his employers and he had no right to take them with him when he left the company. Additionally, he was found to have been in breach of contract.Â
There are not many new legal lessons to learn here, but the case is monumental in its scope.  The manufacturer of Bratz, MGA, was ordered to pay $100 million dollars in damages. And a popular toy line may be gone forever, unless Mattel decides to take over production.Â
